JOLENE NG, LEE SI MIN & DONN KOH
The MATr series is the work of Lee Si Min and Jolene Ng, under the design direction of Donn Koh, the studio principal. Lee Si Min and Jolene Ng are young talents skilled in the area of digital form generation and code-based design tools. Apart from pursuing their bachelors in Industrial Design at National University of Singapore (NUS), Lee Si Min is also involved in other projects focusing largely on UI/UX and service design, while Jolene Ng’s interests lie in exploring projects which cover the areas of interactive and generative design.
Donn Koh Studio dreams up new objects by stretching the accepted definitions of product arche¬types and questioning the assumptions held about how things should be made. Manipulating both age-old techniques as well as emerging tools, the studio translates its ideas into products with a flavor of appropriateness and effortlessness, with an inclination towards technical and mechanical innovativeness, and a strong emphasis on the commercial viability of their products.
Laser sintering allows to create fantastical forms, but the freedom to push the limits of the technique leads to objects too fragile to survive the process. MATr redefines the support structures that make these objects possible, as separate designed objects in their own right, giving rise to the manufacturing of objects within other objects.
